Thermostatic single lever / valve shower mixer tap: make the right choice
The thermostatic shower mixer is one of the available equipment for the bathroom. Mounted on the wall, it is connected to a hand shower via a hose. Like all mixers, it allows the water temperature to be adjusted with one hand.
Unlike other shower taps, the thermostatic mixer offers precise control of the water temperature.
- One handle is used to adjust the water temperature to the exact degree. It is graduated for optimum precision. Thus, the user has the possibility to adjust the temperature only once, without the need for additional adjustment to enjoy the same comfort at each use.
- Another handle allows the user to adjust the water flow. So, it is this second lever that they will manipulate each time they take a shower.
Thermostatic shower mixers are equipped with various systems guaranteeing user safety.
- They limit the water temperature to 38 °C to avoid accidental burns. This safety device optimizes the protection of the elderly and young children.
- This type of shower tap is also programmed to cut off the hot water flow if the cold water supply is insufficient to allow the mixture to reach the desired temperature.
- Thermostatic mixers come in different styles: classic, modern, or retro.
Some advice is useful for the installation, maintenance, and use of a thermostatic shower mixer:
- manufacturers advise pairing this type of tap with a storage water heater (equipped with a hot water tank) rather than an instant water heater (suboptimal performance);
- if the adjustment handle allows for the same water temperature at each use, it is recommended to regularly run cold water to ensure the smooth functioning of the integrated sensor;
- in the case where the device is misadjusted (the graduation does not match the desired temperature), it is enough to dismantle the handle to access the notched ring that allows adjusting the thermostatic cartridge. A thermometer is necessary to verify the water temperature during the adjustment.
The thermostatic shower mixer optimizes the safety and comfort of users, but a minimum of maintenance is required to ensure its operation and durability.
