Recessed downlights and wall lights: make the right choice
Beyond its decorative aspect, the outdoor recessed spotlight can be used to indicate the path when it is installed in a stairwell or on a wall along a pathway. It can also light up a terrace or the front of a door when embedded in the ceiling.
Aside from the design that varies from one spotlight to another, the manufacturing material and technical characteristics are crucial elements in choosing the outdoor light fixture suited to every need.
As for the materials, outdoor recessed spotlights in walls and ceilings can be designed:
- in aluminum, being both lightweight, durable, and stylish;
- in polycarbonate or plastic for their modern aspect;
- in tempered glass for increased durability;
- in stainless steel to prevent rust.
Regarding their features, they are distinguished by:
- their color temperature ranging from 1,100 K for light whose color tends towards red to 8,000 K for light leaning towards blue;
- their light intensity varying from 130 to 2,400 lumens;
- their power ranging from 10 to 100 W which determines their electrical consumption;
- their voltage in Volt (V) from 12 to 240 V.
To install an outdoor recessed spotlight in a wall or ceiling, solid knowledge in the field of DIY and electrical installation is required. In addition to making cuts, refilling, and finishing, it is indeed useful to create electrical circuits.
Regarding the power supply of outdoor lighting, it is recommended to protect the installation from the panel. To this end, it is necessary to set up a 30 mA differential circuit breaker at the base of the new circuit. This device will be the starting point of the lines dedicated to outdoor lighting. These lines are each protected by a 10 A circuit breaker not to mention the grounding.
