Access panels: make the right choice
Installing an access panel is mandatory in every dwelling. By enabling access to electricity, plumbing, or telephone pipes, this feature allows for inspections and repairs. Advice on how to choose and install it.
The access panel is a small opening equipped with a removable panel that allows access to any type of equipment for inspection or repair. Its dimensions are designed to allow the passage of a person (at least 60 x 60 cm). It is most often placed in the bathroom, under the bathtub, to allow access to the siphon. This element is also found at the ceiling level for technical controls and interventions on electrical cables, lighting, or insulation.
Usually, the access panel consists of a panel, a frame, and a locking system. It comes in several shapes and materials:
- the panel can be made of wood, plastic, PVC, steel, or plaster. It is recommended to choose a material in harmony with the bathtub or the ceiling;
- the frame can be made of wood, metal, or PVC with a sealing gasket.
It is important to carefully consider the installation of an access hatch. When installed in the ceiling, in particular, it is necessary to ensure its thermal insulation otherwise it can become a source of heat loss and increase heating consumption. Here are the steps to follow to install this type of opening in the ceiling:
- measure the frame of the access panel;
- mark its location on the suspended ceiling, ensuring that it is located between two furring strips;
- cut the suspended ceiling following the tracing with a keyhole saw;
- insert the frame at an angle, inserting the edges into the suspended ceiling;
- screw onto the peripheral plates with a screwdriver or a conventional drill;
- apply a filler in the joint between the frame and the peripheral plates;
- let dry completely before placing the panel of the hatch on the hinges.
To install an access hatch at the siphon level of a bathtub:
- drill a hole in the drywall at the level of the siphon;
- outline the hole on the board with a pencil;
- drill a hole in all four corners of the outline;
- insert the blade of a jigsaw into the hole, then saw following the marking;
- place the frame of the access panel in the created opening;
- mark the location of holes for drilling and screwing with a pencil;
- screw the frame;
- fix the hatch and then check that it opens and closes properly;
- cover the hatch with a material in harmony with the rest of the surface so that it is invisible.
Installing an access panel is not complicated. Simply follow the mentioned steps for a discreet and successful installation.
