Decking boards: make the right choice
Finding the perfect decking boards should be a straightforward task, provided you take the time to compare a few different materials. It is also important to choose a finish that enhances the style of your outdoor space. Decking boards can either be clipped or screwed into place. As such they are easy to lay and don't require any specific installation skills.
Decking boards offer a whole host of advantages meaning they appeal to all kinds of DIYers from enthusiasts to seasoned pros.
- Whether you go for a European or exotic species, wood is always a popular choice thanks to its aesthetic appeal and durability. This material also allows you to create different patterns by playing around with board direction.
- Wood provides day-to-day comfort as a naturally warm material. It is even possible to walk barefoot on this type of deck.
- Teak decking boards can provide an exotic edge to a deck, especially when paired with a hammock stand. This effect can be enhanced by investing in teak garden furniture.
It's important to weigh up the main properties of different decking boards before settling on a wood species for your garden.
- Pine is a European wood and offers the best value for money. However, it must be heat-treated to extend its service life.
- Chestnut and oak are more hardwearing, but more expensive.
- Exotic wood is naturally moisture-resistant as it originates from tropical climates. The weight and finish of the wood depends on the species you choose. It's worth noting that this type of wood tends to lose its colour with age. It is therefore necessary to treat it using a wood brightener and an exotic wood oil.
There are two ways to secure garden decking: traditional screws or hidden fasteners.
- Visible decking screws can provide an interesting finish. These screws should be made of stainless steel and measure at least three times the thickness of the decking board.
- Hidden fasteners cannot be seen on the surface of the deck. However, care must be taken to ensure that the decking boards do not come loose over time.
In both fixing systems, wooden decking boards are fixed to decking joists, which act as a levelling structure. The joists must sit perpendicular to the decking boards.
