The UV pond filter is a useful accessory for those with an outdoor pond. It can also be referred to as a UV clarifier or a UV sterilizer. It works to destroy certain bacteria and algae particles to preserve the clarity of the water and the health of the fish.
The main role of the UV pond filter is to sterilize the water through the C band, the most germicidal of ultraviolet radiation. On the nanometric scale, its wavelength ranges between 230 nm and 280 nm. Unlike chemical treatments, the UV sterilizer has no side effects over time.
The operating principle of a UV pond filter is quite simple:
- water is sucked in by the pump;
- it then passes through the casing where it is exposed to ultraviolet rays from a lamp.
Thanks to this radiation, all bacteria and microalgae are destroyed.
To optimize sterilization, it is recommended to install the UV pond filter just before the water returns. This way, it will be rid of all impurities, making the treatment more effective.
Furthermore, the characteristics of the lamp must be determined based on:
- the volume of the pond;
- the number of fish.
If the UV lamp is not properly sized, sterilization will not be effective. Generally, 1 m3 of water can be sterilized by a 2 W lamp. However, a 3 W lamp per m3 is advisable in ponds with Koi carp.
The UV pond filter is a device that does not require any particular maintenance. Nevertheless, it is important to note that the lifespan of a UV lamp is between 7,000 to 10,000 hours. On average, an annual replacement is necessary.
