You are on the page of splitting mauls. A combination of an axe and a sledgehammer, it's a practical tool for splitting wood, with or without a wedge. Find here our selection of the best brands at the best prices. Check out our models of different weights with their handle in wood, fiberglass, or tri-material.
Among the tools that can be used to cut, split, and saw wood, there is the splitting maul. Its particularity is to be a sort of mix between an axe and a sledgehammer: this tool has a cutting edge on one side of the head and a square iron on the other, all at the end of a fairly long handle. The head of the splitting maul is quite heavy which allows it to split wood easily. Moreover, it can also be used in combination with wedges, then simply acting as a sledgehammer (its blade being used to create the slit where the wedge will be placed afterward).
On this page, you will find our selection of splitting mauls. For you, we have found the good deals to offer you the best quality at the best price. You will have access to top brands such as FISKARS, LEBORGNE, DUCHESNAY, ... But, beyond that, you may hesitate between several models, without really knowing what criteria to base your choice on? This is why we have written this presentation, which will help you make your choice.
The first characteristic to consider, and it's probably the most important, is the weight of the head of the tool. Indeed, the heavier it is, the more significant the impact will be in the wood. Thus, it will be easier to split the wood with a heavier head. The situation is the same if you use it as a sledgehammer with a wedge. The impact will be more significant with a heavier head, and the wedge will penetrate the log more efficiently.
Then, you can observe a difference in the dimension of the handles. Here, you need to choose between power and precision. A longer handle will give you more amplitude and thus more power at the impact. Conversely, a shorter handle grants you more precision.
Regarding the handle, the material of it can vary. It can be made of wood, "tri-material," or even fiberglass. Wood gives a touch of nobility and a classic look to the tool. If the visual aspect is of little concern to you, turn to fiberglass or "tri-material." Fiberglass makes the handle almost unbreakable and very resistant to vibrations, for a more comfortable use. The handle made of "tri-material" presents similar characteristics, aiming to make the tool pleasant to use and less tiring.
Finally, keep in mind that the splitting maul is a relatively dangerous tool if not used correctly. Make sure to wear reinforced shoes as well as a pair of gloves. The use of safety goggles is also recommended to avoid any injuries caused by splinters.
