Its particularity is to be a sort of mix between an axe and a sledgehammer: this tool has a cutting edge on one side of the head and a square iron on the other, all at the end of a fairly long handle. The head of the splitting maul is quite heavy which allows it to split wood easily. Moreover, it can also be used in combination with wedges, then simply acting as a sledgehammer (its blade being used to create the slit where the wedge will be placed afterward).
