Glue guns: make the right choice
The glue gun makes it easier to glue pieces of wood, plastic, metal, glass, leather, or fabric. With manual or automatic progression, this device is used for both creative hobbies and DIY projects.
First of all, some information to know about the glue gun:
- it is also called a hot melt glue gun;
- unlike the extruder gun (with cold silicone), it uses glue sticks to be heated;
- a resistance heats the stick to about 200 °C;
- the heated glue is expelled in liquid form through the nozzle when the user applies pressure on the trigger;
- wired models must be connected to a power outlet;
- battery versions are appreciated for their maneuverability.
The available devices differ by their operating system.
- Manual progression models require pressure on the trigger to move the glue stick forward. Thus, the consistency of the glue beads depends on the pumping action of the trigger.
- Automatic progression models are equipped with a system that advances the stick gradually. Pressure on the trigger is only needed to open the nozzle to release the glue bead.
Several parameters should be considered when choosing a glue gun:
- its autonomy (for battery models);
- its heating time, ranging from 15 s to 8 min;
- its glue output capacity, which can reach up to 1,000 g/h for the most efficient;
- the provided nozzles (flat, round, with anti-drip system, etc.);
- the compatible stick size;
- its ease of use;
- its weight.
Ultimately, the choice of a hot glue gun depends on its use (hobby or DIY). It should be noted that this device can be used to create seals or to optimize the sealing of joints.
