An electric pool heater extends the swimming season and allows for longer enjoyment of the pool. Several models are available on the market. The choice depends on the configuration of the pool.
The electric pool heater is a heating element through which cold water circulates to be heated. This device is equipped with a thermostat that allows it to turn off as soon as the water reaches the programmed set temperature.
Among its important features are:
- the power that determines the speed at which the pool temperature rises;
- the materials (the body is made of aluminum, plastic, composite, stainless steel, or steel; while the heating element can be in titanium or stainless steel);
- the number of heating elements ranging from 1 to 2;
- the volume of water;
- the flow rate, which must be in accordance with the pump;
- the type of mounting (on a vertical support, a wall, or placed horizontally).
The electric pool heater is placed in the technical room in an intermediary position in the filtration network and before the treatment devices such as ionizers or electrolysis. As the heated water should be poured directly into the pool to avoid losses, it is better to place it between the discharge nozzles on one side, and the pump with the filter on the other. For more specific installations such as in-ground pools, the creation of a by-pass allowing to divert all or part of the flow is required. A 30 mA circuit breaker will also be necessary as part of access to a technical room powered by electricity.
Examining the pool's usage is a necessary step to properly determine the suitable power (in kW). To know this, simply estimate the maximum time required to reach the desired temperature using this formula: [(Volume of the basin x diff.T) x 1.4] / T
T: the maximum desired heating time (in hours).
Diff.T: the difference between the starting water temperature and the desired temperature.
Pairing an electric pool heater with a pool cover can help to save on the electricity bill. Small models have a power range from 3 kW to 12 kW. Installing a timer on the panel is also recommended to schedule water heating during off-peak hours.
