While the first axes, estimated to be about 1.6 million years old, were simply made of a sharpened stone fitted between two pieces of wood, today's axes are much more sophisticated and have characteristics that can vary greatly from one product to another. Indeed, it can be either wood (for a more traditional look to one's tool and very good durability), or fiberglass (good grip and durability), or in "tri-material," a very resistant alloy. This makes the handle unbreakable, resistant to vibrations, and easier to grip. It's the top of the range for axe handles. Moreover, regardless of its material, the handle may be ergonomic, for optimal comfort during work.
The weight of the tool is also a very important attribute. It can vary significantly from one model to another. Since an axe is a tool that is used at arm’s length and can be quite tiring to use, it's better not to forget this parameter. Moreover, lightness will be synonymous with maneuverability.
Finally, accessories may make a difference in favor of one model or another. For example, some axes are equipped with a rubber sheath around the handle, which increases resistance to vibrations and ensures a better grip.
