Artificial hedges: make the right choice
Designing outdoor spaces has become simpler today with various elements such as artificial hedges. Useful for beautifying the garden and delineating spaces, they are available in different shapes, lengths, and heights to meet all needs.
Artificial hedges have characteristics to be aware of:
- they are offered in the form of clip-on panels or rolls to be fixed directly onto fences;
- they are made from the same materials as synthetic grasses, namely polyamide (PA), polyethylene (PE), and polypropylene (PP);
- while some models imitate the foliage of thuja (Canadian cedars), others closely resemble roses, photinia, or ivy;
- they require no maintenance;
- they are treated to resist UV rays.
Several parameters should be considered in the choice.
- The length (3 m to 25 m) and height (1 m to 2 m) of the chosen hedge should be suited to the area to be covered. It is therefore advisable to measure the length and height of the fence before placing an order, to standardize the entire installation.
- The warranty against UV rays and bad weather is a quality guarantee. It can last up to 10 years for some models.
- Some models come with ties, making it easier to attach them to fences.
- Resistant foliage can be washed with a medium-pressure water jet without deteriorating.
The installation of an artificial hedge roll unfolds in a few steps:
- the fence must be cleared of any obstructions;
- the roll taken out of its packaging is placed against the interior side (garden side) of the fence;
- a tie is placed at the top of the fence, another in the middle, and one at the bottom, but the number of attachment points may increase depending on the height of the model to be installed;
- other ties are placed as you go along at the same levels with a spacing of 1 m;
- the knots are turned towards the outside (street or neighbor’s side) of the fence;
- the joints between the rolls can be secured using clamping collars or clips.
The artificial hedge can be used to protect against being overlooked, but it must be adapted to the dimensions of the fence. The choice of foliage type depends on each person's taste.
